How It Works

The Gravity-Fed Port System:

Feed flows from the large reservoir down into the feeding ports through gravity. As chickens eat from the ports, more feed automatically flows down to maintain supply.

The port design uses a deep, tunnel-shaped 90mm opening that limits sideways beak flicking and helps keep feed inside the port rather than on the ground. Because chickens reach inward to eat, instead of sweeping feed across a flat surface, far more feed stays contained compared to open troughs or bowls.

Rain Hoods Protect Against Weather:

Each port features an integrated rain hood that extends over the opening, shedding water away whilst still allowing easy head access for birds. Even in heavy rain or snow, feed inside the ports and reservoir stays completely dry.

Overnight Pest Prevention:

The included red port plugs insert snugly into each port opening. Use them to close the feeder at night (preventing nocturnal pests from accessing feed) or to block unused ports if you have a smaller flock within the range.

Why Port Feeders Are Superior:

vs. Open Troughs or Bowls: Traditional open feeders invite chickens to scratch, perch on edges, and flip feed everywhere. Birds commonly waste 20-40% of feed through spillage. Port feeders significantly reduce this waste.

vs. Traditional Hanging Feeders: Hanging feeders with simple openings still allow considerable feed scattering as chickens peck and scratch. The deep tunnel design provides much better waste reduction.

Reduced Pest Attraction: With significantly less feed on the ground, rats and mice have less to scavenge. Wild birds have reduced access. This helps manage vermin problems that plague keepers using open feeding methods.

Training Your Flock:

Most chickens understand port feeders immediately - they see and smell feed in the ports. For first-time users, simply sprinkle a small amount of feed onto the outer rim of the ports. Chickens investigating this visible feed will quickly discover the abundance inside the port and learn to feed normally.

The Elevation Advantage:

Positioning on bricks or a stand (ports at chest/shoulder height for your smallest bird) provides comfortable feeding posture and keeps the feeder base clean and dry.

Why Choose This Feeder?

Fully Assembled & Ready - Arrives completely assembled with ports and rain hoods pre-installed. Simply fill with feed, position in your coop or run, and introduce to your flock. No tools, no assembly, no complexity.

Significant Feed Savings - By preventing most spillage and spoilage, you'll use considerably less feed over time, leading to noticeable savings on feed bills for larger flocks.

Better Pest Management - Reducing ground feed removes much of the attraction for rats, mice, and wild birds. Many keepers report significantly reduced vermin problems after switching to port feeders.

Less Refilling, More Time - With 50L capacity (30-40kg feed), refill frequency depends on your flock size within the 8-32 bird range. This frees up daily chore time for actually enjoying your birds.

Weatherproof Performance - Suitable for outdoor runs without shelter - the sealed lid and rain hoods protect feed in all weather conditions. No more soggy, mouldy feed to dispose of after rainstorms.

Port Plugs for Flexibility - Use plugs to close the feeder overnight (preventing nocturnal pests), during extended absences, or to reduce the number of active ports for smaller flocks within the range.

Anti-Tip Stability - The anti-tip design with wide base and low centre of gravity ensures stability, preventing spills even with enthusiastic flocks. Two clips secure the lid providing extra safety.

Perfect for: Reducing feed waste and costs, managing pest problems, keeping feed dry in outdoor runs, reducing refilling frequency for larger flocks, improving on traditional open feeders.

Installation

Getting Started

Setup Time: Instant - arrives fully assembled
Training Time: Immediate to 24 hours (most chickens need no training)

Step 1: Remove Port Plugs

Each feeding port arrives with a red plug inserted for shipping protection. Remove all 4 plugs and set aside - you'll use these to close ports overnight or when not in use.

Step 2: Position the Feeder

Place feeder on bricks, pavers, concrete blocks, or purpose-built stand (approximately 10-15cm high).

Height Positioning: The bottom of the feeder ports should align with your smallest chicken's shoulder height. This provides comfortable feeding access for all flock members whilst helping reduce waste.

Location Guidelines:

  • Inside coops or covered runs (can also be used in fully outdoor runs due to weatherproof design)
  • Away from roosting bars (prevents overnight fouling)
  • Near water source (chickens drink after eating)
  • On stable, level surface

Tip: Use the carry handle to position the feeder when empty - it's much easier than moving it when full of 30-40kg feed.

Step 3: Fill with Feed

  1. Unlatch and lift weatherproof lid using the two clips
  2. Remove tamper-evident tab (first use only)
  3. Fill bucket with your chosen feed (holds 50 litres / 30-40kg)
  4. Replace lid firmly - the tight seal keeps feed fresh and dry

Feed Types: Works with pellets, crumbles, mixed grains, scratch, or any dry commercial poultry feed.

Step 4: Initial Training (Usually Unnecessary)

For Chickens Familiar with Any Feeder:
Simply position the feeder. Most chickens will investigate, see feed in the ports, and begin eating immediately. No training required.

For Cautious or First-Time Port Users:

  1. Sprinkle a small amount of feed onto the outer rim of each port
  2. This visible feed attracts investigation
  3. As chickens peck at the rim feed, they'll discover the abundance inside the port
  4. Within minutes to hours, they'll feed confidently from inside the ports
  5. Once one chicken understands, others learn by observation

Training Tips:

  • Most flocks adapt immediately or within the first day
  • A light sprinkle on the port rim is usually all that's needed
  • Be patient with nervous breeds - they may take 24-48 hours to feel confident
  • Keep the feeder in place - moving it during training confuses birds

Step 5: Using Port Plugs

Overnight Closure (Optional but Recommended):
Insert red plugs into ports each evening to prevent nocturnal pests (rats, mice, possums) from accessing feed. Remove plugs each morning.

Unused Ports:
If your flock is at the smaller end of the 8-32 range, plug extra ports to keep feed fresher and prevent unnecessary exposure.

Extended Absences:
Plug all ports when leaving for several days (ensure birds have alternative feed arranged).

Placement & Usage Tips

Optimal Stand Height:
Position so feeding ports are at chest/shoulder level for your birds:

  • Bantams: 10-12cm stand height
  • Standard breeds: 12-15cm stand height
  • Large fowl: 15-20cm stand height

Multiple Feeders:
For flocks larger than 32 birds, or to prevent dominant birds monopolising feed, position multiple feeders in different locations.

Managing Feed Levels:
When feed level drops below the port openings, give the bucket a good shake to redistribute feed. This prevents feed at the bottom from sitting too long and ensures fresh feed flows to the ports.

Preventing Perching:
The square lid and stable design discourage perching, but if birds persistently perch on top, consider placing a sloped board on the lid.

Troubleshooting

Feed not flowing to ports:
Give the bucket a shake to settle feed and break up any bridges. Some feed types (especially fine crumbles) can create air pockets that prevent flow.

Chickens pulling feed out:
Ensure feeder is at proper height (ports at shoulder level) to minimize this behaviour. Proper positioning helps reduce waste significantly.

Feed gets damp in ports:
Check that rain hoods are properly positioned. In extreme driving rain, consider additional overhead shelter or repositioning the feeder to a more protected spot.

Birds won't use the feeder:
Follow the training steps - sprinkle feed on the port rims. Give them 24-48 hours. Ensure they have no alternative food sources during training (but always provide water).

Feed clumping in humid weather:
Normal with fine feeds in high humidity. Break up clumps and ensure lid seal is tight to minimize moisture entry. Give the bucket a shake to redistribute feed.

Feed getting stale at bottom:
Remember to shake the bucket when levels drop below the ports. This rotates feed and prevents staleness.

Maintenance

Maintenance & Cleaning

Daily: Visual check of feed level and port accessibility

Weekly/As Needed: Top up feed - frequency depends on flock size within the 8-32 bird range and feed type

Important Feed Management:

When feed level drops below the port openings, give the bucket a shake to redistribute feed and prevent staleness at the bottom. This ensures fresh feed continues flowing to the ports.

Monthly Quick Clean:

  1. Empty any remaining feed into clean container
  2. Wipe down bucket interior with dry cloth
  3. Check ports for any clumped or compacted feed
  4. Refill with fresh feed

Deep Clean (Every 2-3 Months):

  1. Empty feeder completely
  2. Remove ports if possible for thorough cleaning (check your model)
  3. Wash bucket and ports with warm water and poultry-safe disinfectant
  4. Dry completely before refilling - moisture causes feed to mould
  5. Inspect rain hoods for damage
  6. Replace feed

Feed Storage Tips:

Keep feed dry at all times. Even the best feeder cannot protect feed that arrives damp or develops mould. Store feed bags in dry locations and transfer to feeder in dry weather when possible.

Preventing Clumping:

In humid conditions, fine particles in crumble feeds can occasionally compact in ports. Simply tap the port or use a stick to break up any compaction. This occurs much less frequently than in traditional feeders due to the protected design.

Winter Considerations:

The weatherproof design excels in winter - feed stays dry even in snow. However, ensure chickens can still access ports comfortably if snow accumulates around the feeder base. Elevating the feeder helps significantly.

FAQ's

How many chickens will this feeder support?

Ideal for 8-32 chickens with four ports. Actual capacity depends on flock size, breed, and whether birds free-range or are confined. With 50L capacity (30-40kg feed), refill frequency varies based on your specific flock size within this range.

Do chickens need training to use port feeders?

Most chickens need zero training - they see and smell feed in the ports and begin eating immediately. For cautious birds, simply sprinkle a small amount of feed onto the port rims as an invitation. Most flocks adapt within minutes to hours.

Will this completely eliminate feed waste?

No - whilst the port design significantly reduces waste compared to open feeders, some determined chickens can still pull feed out onto the ground. However, you'll see a dramatic reduction in waste compared to traditional feeders.

What feed types can I use?

All dry commercial poultry feeds:

  • Layer pellets
  • Grower pellets
  • Starter/grower crumbles
  • Mixed grains
  • Scratch mixes
  • Organic feeds

Avoid wet or damp feeds which can clump and mould.

Can I use this outdoors?

Yes! The weatherproof lid and rain hoods specifically protect feed from rain and snow. This feeder can be successfully used in completely uncovered outdoor runs. The tight seal keeps feed dry even in heavy weather.

How do the port plugs work?

The red plugs insert snugly into each port opening. Use them to:

  • Close ports overnight (prevents rats/mice/wild birds from feeding)
  • Block unused ports if you have fewer birds
  • Seal the feeder during extended absences

Simply pull plugs out each morning to allow bird access.

Is this really rat-proof?

No feeder is completely rat-proof if determined rodents are present. However, this design significantly helps by reducing ground feed (which attracts pests) and providing port plugs for overnight closure when rats are most active.

Why do I need to shake the bucket?

When feed level drops below the port openings, feed at the bottom can sit unused and become stale. Give the bucket a shake to redistribute this feed upward and keep everything rotating. This ensures your flock always has access to fresh feed.

How do I clean it?

Monthly: Empty remaining feed, wipe interior with dry cloth, check ports for compaction, refill. Takes 10 minutes.

Deep clean every 2-3 months: Wash with warm water and poultry-safe disinfectant, dry completely, refill. Takes 20 minutes.

Much easier than open feeders which require constant cleaning due to contamination.

Will this work for bantams and large fowl?

Yes! Suitable for all chicken sizes. The key is proper height adjustment using your stand:

  • Bantams: Lower stand height (10-12cm)
  • Large fowl: Higher stand height (15-20cm)

Ports should align with shoulder height of your smallest birds.

Can I use this for ducks, turkeys, or other poultry?

Yes! Suitable for chickens, ducks, turkeys, guinea fowl, geese, and other poultry. Adjust mounting height appropriately for the species using the feeder.

How long does feed stay fresh?

In the sealed, weatherproof bucket, feed stays fresh for weeks. The lack of moisture exposure prevents mould and spoilage. Remember to shake the bucket when levels get low to rotate feed. Avoid filling completely if your smaller flock won't consume 30-40kg within 2-3 weeks.

How much will this actually reduce my feed costs?

Results vary, but many keepers report noticeable reductions in feed usage. The port design prevents the majority of spillage, contamination from droppings, and loss to pests that occurs with open feeders.

Can I mount this on the wall?

This feeder is designed to sit on a stand/platform rather than wall-mount. The square bucket and carry handle design work best when elevated on a stable surface.

How heavy is it when full?

Empty: Approximately 4kg | Full: Approximately 33-43kg (depending on feed type - pellets are denser than crumbles). Use the carry handle to move when needed, but positioning before filling is much easier.
