Originally from the county of Sussex in southern England, the Sussex is one of the most popular breeds with backyard keepers – and for good reason. Hardy, docile and an excellent layer, it ticks almost every box for a successful first flock.
Origin and appearance
The Sussex is an old dual-purpose breed (eggs and meat), known for its broad, stocky build. Its plumage is most often white with black markings (the "Light Sussex" variety), but depending on the line it also comes in buff, speckled and other colours. Cocks and hens both have a bright red single comb and an equally calm temperament.
How many eggs does a Sussex hen lay per year?
The Sussex is known for generous laying: expect 200 to 250 eggs a year, medium to large, with light brown to cream shells. A real advantage in Switzerland's cold winters: the Sussex keeps laying steadily through the colder months, unlike many breeds that slow down sharply in winter. Laying usually starts at around 5 months (20–22 weeks).
Temperament: an ideal hen for families
Curious, friendly and not easily frightened, the Sussex is known as one of the most docile breeds in the backyard. It gets on well with children, lives easily alongside other poultry and will happily follow you around the garden in search of attention (or a treat). It is also a good brooder and can make an excellent mother if you plan to breed.
Care tips
- Space: allow about 1 m² per hen in the run, and more if possible for this medium-to-large breed.
- Feeding: a no-waste feeder is especially useful for this rather greedy breed. Sussex hens tend to put on weight if overfed, which can reduce laying.
- Water: like any good layer, the Sussex needs constant access to clean water, especially at peak laying.
- Winter: its natural hardiness copes well with the Swiss climate, but a dry, draught-free coop is still essential.
